Exploring and Integrating Technology for STEM Instruction: Identifying 3 Emerging STEM Tools

Generation Genius

Generation Genius Generation Genius | The Next Generation in Science Videos is an online source that offers digital resource materials for both science and math lessons. Some examples include Introduction to Weather & Sound, What is Engineering, Energy Transfer, Composing & Decomposing Numbers, and many more. This source also includes state-based science standards alignment for teachers to follow and ensure that each lesson is being taught to positively impact students’ learning potential. Through Generation Genius students will become motivated to learn, increasing their curiosity for knowledge while discovering new possibilities through the world of STEM. Teachers can incorporate this lesson through hands-on whole group class activities or have students display their work through individual project assignments.

Prodigy

Prodigy Teachers (prodigygame.com) is an online digital platform gear towards gamification learning. This fun and interactive resource allows teachers to provide level-up classroom engagement while boosting classroom motivation & learning in math and reading. This gaming application builds strong skills in math & reading with math strategies and word problems that can be individualized towards students learning needs. Teachers can generate questions, track progress, and collect data to assist with growing students’ content knowledge. Learning through gaming or gamification promotes higher positive learning gains which has been reported to increase problem-solving, pattern exploration, cognitive, emotional control, and computational thinking skills (Timotheou, S., et. ah., 2023). Prodigy can be assigned as individual homework or classroom assignments which can take the place of written math lessons. Teachers can also make learning more fun by using this platform as a competitive tool for learning with students. Learning through competition brings forth skills such as teamwork further developing communication and collaboration skills. In addition, students learn social and emotional skills while strengthening math related knowledge.

Elementari

Elementari Interactive Self-Guided Lessons | Elementari is an emerging and innovative interdisciplinary platform that utilizes technology, literacy, math, and art to create digital storybooks. Student learners can enhance their reading, technology, and speaking skills by creating interactive stories all while learning about coding. Other cross-curriculum subjects incorporated into this resource are social studies, science, and language skills. Elementari promotes a higher order of thinking as students will be challenged to think outside the box creating stories that build on social-emotional skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This learning tool is great for autonomy learning allowing students to independently work creating unique and fun stories and games. Teachers can increase classroom engagement with Elementari providing students with lessons from multiple subjects like reading, typing, & digital drawing while teaching the importance of digital citizenship.
